Last week I got into an email conversation with a good friend of mine. We were talking about the movie Fireproof. He had heard good things about it. I expressed my skepticism. I had watched the trailer and was (and still am) convinced that this is just another trite, cheesy movie made by Christians and for Christians. And the tag line, “Never leave your partner behind“… are you kidding me? But it was my friends’ response to my cynicism that caught me off guard…

“Gotta take what you can get these days man.”

Now, to be fair, my friend was speaking a little tongue and cheek. But, I do think there are many in the Church that actually subscribe to that sentiment. What good does it do to support and promote bad art purely on the merit that it speaks a good message? We should demand better from the Church. Trite, cheesy, melodramatic, over done, over acted stories are just not going to cut it.

So will I go see Fireproof? Actually, I might. It seems to have created enough buzz and I honestly want to be able to judge it for myself. However, I most likely won’t go see The Imposter, starring a chubby Kevin Max. (cue awkward silence)
